Learn to read the cards

What does the future hold? How can one master one's destiny? These eternal questions have preoccupied humankind since the dawn of time, and we have never stopped trying to answer them by drawing on beliefs, arts, and remarkably varied supports.

The Tarot de Marseille is a highly sought-after divinatory tool. If you have managed to acquire one, then you hold an extraordinary tarot in your hands. Difficult, some will say? Not at all, as long as you keep your practical sense: connect the meaning of the cards to concrete stories. The Tarot speaks about life, yours, and that of those around you. Work by association of ideas, using the keywords as a guide. Get into the habit of grasping the meaning of a card at first glance. You have all the time you need to learn. The Tarot will never leave you again. You will have mastered it the day you hear yourself say: "My cards, I love them!"

Tip

To practice, pick a card at random and say out loud: "When I see the Star, I think... communication, confidence, art. When I see the Hermit, I think... delays, frustration." This exercise will help you memorize the meaning of the 22 major arcana. For the Tarot, one speaks of arcana or cards rather than playing cards.

How to read the cards

Shuffle the cards each time you want to do a reading. Place the deck face down. Cut the deck in two with your left hand. Turn over the bottom pile with your left hand as well (the one that did not move when you cut), and interpret. Turn over the second pile and interpret. Reading the two cards at the bottom of the two piles gives you the current trend.

The open question

After shuffling and cutting the cards, lay the deck out in front of you, face down. Draw 5 cards from the deck and arrange them as shown in the diagram opposite.

  • Card 1: the present situation.
  • Card 2: the obstacles. If the card is positive, there is no opposition, nor any major obstacles.
  • Card 3: future events. The evolution.
  • Card 4: the answer.
  • Card 5: the synthesis.
